How will IBM’s Power8 End of Support Announcement affect you?

IBM have announced the End of Support for Power8 Scale-Out systems for early 2024

Users running production workloads on Power8 technology are advised to plan a migration to Power10. Many customers will have run their Power8 in production for at least 5 years. With each year of service, continuing to run production workload on Power8 has an increasing risk profile, reflected in IBM’s End of Service date in 2024. Ongoing maintenance costs for Power8 infrastructure often provide a strong case for migration to Power10. However, depending on how current your OS is, it may be a quick and easy move to Power10.

When IBM i Operating System version 7.5 was released this year, IBM confirmed it will not run on Power8. But the other supported OS versions 7.3 and 7.4 can run on Power10 with the latest Tech Refresh PTF. So the benefits of Power10 are within reach for anyone on a supported OS.

Power10 migrations deliver immediate and lasting benefits for existing Power8 users. Reduced maintenance costs, reduced power consumption, reduced rack space and greater sustainability.
