How to determine your High Availability requirements

 

Now more than ever, business critical processes and applications need to be available around the clock, with no single point of failure. Furthermore, all businesses, big and small, must be prepared to keep its systems performing during unplanned scenarios such as application issues, power outages or extreme weather events. As a result, businesses need to continually review HA and DR solutions to assess whether the business needs are still being met with their current solution.



Evaluate your requirements

The most important point to consider is the type of outage you are attempting to protect your organisation from. Are long backup windows resulting in lost production hours? Issues with unplanned outages eg: Frequent power cuts? Establishing your businesses requirements is one of the most important steps in identifying the right solution for you.

Determine your RTO

Determining your RTO is a key consideration in deciding between a HA and DR solution. RTO is the amount of time that can pass before you start facing significant consequences such as lost revenue or a decline is customer goodwill or brand reputation. If your requirements are for a RTO of seconds or minutes then a High Availability solution can help you achieve this. A DR solution however does not necessarily provide you with “availability” and can often take a longer amount of time to get back online after a failure as this often means rebuilding key components of your infrastructure.
