IBM Hyperswap - How does it work?

IBM HyperSwap provides your business with a highly resilient high availability solution. This solution provides you with continuous availability of data during planned and unplanned outages such as disk array failures. If storage at either site goes offline, HyperSwap will automatically fail over storage access to the system at the surviving site.

How does it work?

Hyperswap technology protects IBM i partitions from failure or complete loss of a disk array or disk controller. It clusters two independent IBM Storwize controllers together and maintains synchronous active-active relationships between the two. This means in event of a failure or loss of one of the disk controllers, no outage is experienced for the IBM i partition. Users and applications continue as normal on the second clustered controller. No configuration is needed on the IBM i partition to benefit from Hyperswap.

When downtime is not an option

If you are concerned about performing a switch in the event of a disaster or have very high resiliency requirements you could implement hardware based replication using a IBM Hyperswap configuration, this can ensure that no downtime occurs due to a loss of one storage controller and is a highly resilient option if no data loss is the primary objective.
